The overall aim of the Sports and Life Skills Project is that it enables young people of ages 14-18 years to improve their sporting knowledge and skill and to enhance their everyday lives through encompassing functional life skills in the programme to get them ready for working life.
It also enables the young people to have fun, enjoy the sessions but to challenge them individually in achieving the best they can for themselves and to work on their already learned skills and knowledge. It will also give them a chance to enhance their CV, attend sports coaching sessions and gain various sports coaching qualifications.
Quality Standards, Staff information and Liability
All of our coaching team holds an enhanced CRB to work with young people and we have public liability insurance up to £6m and employer’s liability insurance up to £2m. We deliver the project through the Quality Standards set by the DCSF on Work Experience and we cover the six elements/standards to ensure quality of delivery.
Delivery and content of the Project
The young people are asked to attend 1 full day a week (9.30-3.30pm) for a term or ideally throughout the year which enables the learners to take full advantage of the Project and its rewards. The day will comprise of a culmination of sports theory (which encompasses functional life skills) in the morning and practical sessions in the afternoon but could change depending on the content of each session.
Within the sessions we intend to incorporate information in line with the five outcomes of Every Child Matters. Below is a paragraph on how the project meets each outcome.
Be Healthy
The young people will learn about healthy living through healthy foods and drinks and the effects these have on the body and by taking part in practical sports sessions and this affects the body. We also look at the effects of taking illegal drugs and alcohol and the effects and aim to discuss the physical and mental side of sport and life. The learners will also be taking part in sporting activities to encompass the theory and put it into practice.
Stay Safe
The young people will learn about being and keeping safe, in school, at home and everyday life. We will look at bullying, discrimination, safety of themselves and others and inform them if young people don’t feel safe were they can go for help. We will also look at health and safety in the leisure industry.
Enjoy and Achieve
The young people will learn how to enjoy sports and life through a better knowledge of what services are there for them to enjoy. They will look at how to improve their own personal and social development like positive relationships with peers, respect, teamwork, and working together to achieve a goal, being confidence in situations, assertiveness and self esteem.
Make a Positive Contribution
The young people will look at acceptable/unacceptable behaviour in school and on the sports field by learning about why we have rules and regulations and consequences of not having them. They will learn about developing positive relationships through team work/building. They will learn how to face challenges and work through them with the help and support from peers and tutors/coaches. The learners will also take part in peer coaching and mentoring throughout the project.
Achieve Economic Well Being
The learners will discuss and learn about working, opportunities whether it be Further Education or Higher Education courses or enhancing further professional development. They will learn about services that can help and support them in achieving their goals and also about how they can play a part in their community.
